Here are the two things you must keep in mind: If: Youre happy, the other person treats you well and your life is better as a result of that person being in it, you stay. You must have all three. Theres not point in being with someone that treats you well and makes your life better, but for one reason or another youre unhappy (probably because youre not compatible). On the other hand: If: Youre not happy or the other person doesnt treat you well or your life is not better as a result of that person being in it, you leave. You only need one of these to be present. Youre probably saying to yourself, Yes, thats obvious. If its so obvious, then why are there so many bad relationships? Anyone in the world By Albert Guthrie Part One: New Economies Suffer from American-Style Diets At first, it seemed a sign of success that the emerging middle class in developing economies around the world had finally found a way to eat whatever they want. The unexpected and paradoxical truth is that people in such countries are making food choices that lead to much higher occurrences of killers like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. According to the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO), successfully developing countries around the world are creating populations that have a new-found ability to eat whatever they want and are compromising themselves because of it. They are adopting new eating habits with consequences that range from increased risk of premature death to serious chronic conditions that reduce the overall quality of life. In other words, they are becoming more like Americans. In a very short time, we have seen large populations, like India (see link below), compromising themselves by behaving much like we do here in the U.S. They are choosing high calorie, high saturated fat foods and are paying with the same loss of good health. The difference between us and them? We have lived with this problem so long that it seems normal to us. We dont see what a burden the need for weight loss has placed on us. To a developing country that has never had to deal with a giant population of weight related illnesses, the financial and social consequences of an overweight population are very new and clear to them as they try to adjust their budgets and social services to contend with the phenomena. To us, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke are all part of life as it has been for decades and the repercussions from being overweight have been around so long that we seem to have accepted them as part of the regular daily grind. We dont see the damage that these weight triggered diseases are creating. The perception, however, of how an overweight population effects us as a nation is about to change. The changing numbers will demand attention. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that we are experiencing acceleration toward increasingly larger percentages of our population which have a body mass index considered unhealthy. Check out the numbers: In 1995, 50 states reported that less than 20 percent of their adult population were overweight. Five years later, only 28 states could still report the same numbers. And by 2005, that number had dropped even lower: A lonely four states could report only 20 percent of their population as overweight. The rest of the states have seen percentages climb to 25 percent. Essentially the numbers are telling us that we werent doing very well to begin with and we are getting progressively worse. Also, so far, we have only mentioned changes in the adult population. The percentage of children who are overweight in the U.S. has risen steadily at a rate of 4 to 6 percent per decade (depending on age segments) to the point where we were seeing over 15 percent overall of children under 19 years old who were considered overweight in a 2000 CDC study topping at 19 percent as reported in a recent study from the Institute of Medicine. Clearly, developing countries have painted a by-the-numbers picture: no exercise, higher fat and calorie rich diets equals higher rates of disease, just like us. Therefore, it should come as little surprise that medical researchers are exploring new avenues in an effort to find ways to attack cancer. The investigation into alternative cancer therapies often begins by examining the cultures of specific nations in an effort to determine whether diet or other customs could help unlock the secret to curing this dreaded disease. Since green tea has been a staple of the Japanese diet for centuries, its not surprising that new attention is being paid to the teas therapeutic benefits. In recent years, doctors and scientific researchers have been focusing new attention on the idea of drinking green tea in an effort to keep cancer at bay. Its been thought that the beverage possesses certain natural properties which make it a likely cancer preventative. Studying Green Tea In-Depth In order to look at this issue in more depth, researchers Kazue Imai, Kenji Suga, and Kei Nakachi of the Saitama Cancer Center Research Institute in Saitama, Japan, decided to examine the effects of green tea drinking among the Japanese. In an article entitled Cancer-Preventive Effects of Drinking Green Tea Among a Japanese Population in Preventative Medicine magazine, the research team explored the therapeutic benefits of green tea at length. When the researchers began their investigation, there had been a number of studies indicating that the main ingredient of green tea, epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, was anti-carcinogenic. However, there was little evidence to suggest that EGCG could prevent cancer in human beings. While some human studies had been conducted, the results were far from conclusive. The Japanese research team strongly believed that it was absolutely critical to conduct an in-depth study in an Asian nation, given the popularity of tea consumption in the Orient. Ultimately, the Japanese scientists found that those Japanese subjects who drank green tea were less likely to develop cancer. This was particularly true among women who consumed more than ten cups of green tea each day. A Natural Cancer Prevention Tool The rate of cancer was low among both men and women who consumed large amounts of green tea. In addition, a study of 384 cancer patients indicated that increased consumption of green tea was linked with a delay in the onset of cancer. Again, this phenomenon was most prevalent among women who consumed more than ten cups of green tea each day. The average delay for the onset of cancer was four yearsfour years of enhanced quality of life for the subjects involved. To a Western mind, drinking ten cups of green tea daily can seem mind-bogglingespecially if one has difficulty consuming eight glasses of water each day. It should be noted that, on average, the subjects were probably consuming 150 ml of green tea per cup. That would amount to about 300 to 400 milligrams of EGCGa healthy amount, by any standard. More Powerful Than Once Thought It has become clear that green tea is far more powerful in fighting cancer than researchers once thought. For instance, scientists recently discovered that green teas unique chemical makeup enables it to combat one of the key cancer-causing molecules linked to tobacco use. The ground-breaking evidence appeared in a journal published by the American Chemical Society. In the study, researchers examined the effects of two components of green tea, EGCG and epigallocatechin, also known as EGC. These substances are close to the consistency of cancer-preventing substances in red wine, grapes, broccoli, and cabbage. The research team discovered that EGCG and EGC can inhibit a molecule that often turns on genes that can be harmful to the body, leading to the development of cancer. However, its unclear whether the results in the science lab could be replicated in a persons home, since the effectiveness of drinking green tea depends on how the beverage is used by the human body. In addition, there appear to be differences between varieties of green tea, so additional study is necessary to prove the beverages effectiveness in inhibiting potentially harmful molecular processes. The Need for More Research Based upon the evidence presented in the study conducted by Imai, Suga, and Nakachi, there can be little doubt that their research indicates that consuming green tea can lead to the prevention of cancer. However, additional research is definitely needed in order to determine which organs of the body could best benefit from green tea. In other words, will drinking green tea fight stomach cancer? Breast cancer? Colon cancer? At this point, the answers to these questions remain unclear. Yet, it should be noted that laboratory tests show that green teas EGCG can zero in on organs in an effort to prevent cancer. The initial research into cancer prevention using green tea is incredibly encouraging. To begin with, green tea is an ordinary part of many peoples diets, so drinking the beverage does not necessarily mean a radical lifestyle change. If people are already accustomed to consuming green tea, it stands to reason that they wouldnt mind consuming more of it, if it would mean preventing the occurrence of cancer. A Virtually Problem-Free Solution Some approaches to preventing cancer may seem initially appealing, but can become decidedly less so because of the side effects involved. However, there are no toxic effects linked to green tea consumption, meaning that this cancer-fighting remedy is especially promising. In addition, green tea appears to be a powerful cancer prevention tool. If the beverages therapeutic effects were limited, there wouldnt be a great deal of interest in using it as a cancer preventative. However, the strong link between green tea consumption and cancer prevention indicated by the Japanese study means that there is good reason for people to consider adding green tea to their diets. Effects Beyond the Orient Some might conclude that green tea drinking only prevents cancer among Asian populations, but researchers in the field believe that would be a mistake. Its entirely possible that, if Westerners also made green tea a significant part of their daily diet, they would also see the preventative effects. From magnificent Balloon Arches and Ice Sculptures to Floral Decorations and Favours, there are many many ways of decorating your venue to your taste. Dont forget that there are Venue Decorators who can book everything for you, giving you one less thing to worry about! The food you choose to provide will also add to the atmosphere of your Reception; do you wish to have a formal A La Carte sit down meal, or a more relaxed Buffet style supper, or indeed both one for daytime and one for the evening? Also consider whether you need to hire additional linens, crockery, cutlery or glassware. You will need to ensure that there are drinks available for everyone; alcoholic beverages can be supplied by a Mobile Bar if your venue doesnt provide one. Dont forget soft drinks for children and designated drivers; you could even provide a Mobile Juice Bar to really impress the kids! When choosing your Wedding Cake you will need to decide whether you wish to serve it as a dessert. There are many options available as well as the traditional fruit cake, including chocolate cakes, croquembouches (traditional French profiterole towers) and chocolate fountains. Continue your theme by your choice of Entertainment. Organise a Crche for the little ones so that Mums and Dads can enjoy your big day too. Whilst youre eating consider having some background music a soloist, or duet such as harpists or pipers can create a beautiful ambience without being too intrusive. Wandering Entertainers are a brilliant way of keeping guests entertained during a lull, for example between the day and evening entertainment, whilst the bride and groom get changed or during the meal. Choose from many many options including caricaturists, hypnotists, mind readers, look-a-likes, magicians, stilt-walkers, fire-eaters, or even tarot or psychic readers. In the evening, remember that you will be pretty busy chatting to guests, but dont let that take over. Make sure that some time is spent with your new spouse, not just the first dance! Choose a suitable entertainment such a Country & Western or Celilidh Band to get guests dancing. Remember that if you are having live performers, they will require a rest from singing or playing so you may need a Disco to play all your favourite classic records or another form of entertainment to fill in the interim periods. Jazz or Blues bands are frequently booked to add to atmosphere, and Tribute or Original Bands are brilliant for die-hard music fans. Why not draw the evening to an end with an impressive firework or laser display? Your Wedding Night suite; if your Reception is at a Hotel, do ask to see if you can book the Bridal Suite and see if they will allow you to book rooms for your Guests. You may wish to add Guest Accommodation details, such as local hotels and B&Bs to your Wedding Invitations. If you are spending your Wedding Night away from your reception, you will need to have booked suitable transport, and have contact details of local taxi firms available for your Guests. Consider booking a Toastmaster. As well as adding some glamour to your day, your Toastmaster is also an invaluable source of Wedding Etiquette will help with speech writing and will make the day run smoothly.
