Who gives the speeches Well, this is really up to the couple thats getting married, but there seems to be a normal list of people that are expected to say something. The wedding party usually has the most members talking about the bride or the groom. The Best Man and Matron or Maid of Honor are the ones that will be giving short speeches before dinner in most cases. Other members of the party can also speak if the couple chooses. The father of the bride usually gives a speech to the guests, thanking them for coming as well as saying a word or two to the groom. The couple themselves may also want to talk to the guests, giving them thanks and their love. Of course, the reception isnt the only place for speeches. Many times, the wedding rehearsal has one or two of the couples parents speaking as well. As many people as the couple wants can speak, but what if youre the one thats asked? Before you stand up If youre asked to give a speech, no doubt youre nervous and at a loss for what to say. The best advice is to keep your speech short and simple, so that your nerves dont have time to take over and so that your creativity isnt sapped. Make a list of all of the things that you admire and love about the couple or half of the couple. If youve been friends for a while, you may want to include a joke or a story. The best advice is to keep the story clean thoughtheir parents may not want to know what theyve done. Talk about the person and then end with some sort of revelation or note of congratulation. Raise your glass and toast the couple. Its really as easy as that. If youre afraid that youll become nervous, make sure that you rehearse the speech often, writing it well in advance. Or you can just focus on your friend as you give the speech and avoid making eye contact out into the reception crowd. Indeed, if we dont want to go around in circles, we might as well have a good map handy, not that we really know how to read it anyway, so we better study it ahead of time. We must accept the fact that he will keep trying several routes to find his way when he is lost. Yes, it is annoying that he wont stop and ask for directions, but quarrelling and yelling wont solve the problem. To him, accepting the reality of such defeat is a sign of weakness and he doesnt like that a bit. On the other hand, we also sin, for the truth of the matter is that most women have a hard time reading maps; we also have a terrible sense of direction. I am one of them: it took me almost 6 months to learn that I needed to turn right and not left on a certain road when going to my piano teachers studio. A Word of Advice: Ladies: Study any unknown route before leaving home and leave early. Never trust a man to help you find your way, unless you remember to ask for landmarks, though I doubt he will remember any. By Morgan Hamilton One day while I was hanging out on the Internet, I stumbled across something very interesting. It took me by surprise and I'm not really sure why. It was nothing scandalous, it was simply the online personals section of my local web portal. What I've read on these online personals is what made me pause. That would all be fine and dandy if you lived your life in 90 minutes, or 20 chapters, or 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

But what of the real world, where you can't rewind the movie or put the song on repeat forever.

Ah, the real world. That place where humans slither and crawl, claw and dig, and finally - gasping for breath - hope they've at last arrived at the dawn of nirvana.

In days gone by a woman wanted a man with good breeding. Good breeding sounds like an event that would have taken place in a cattle rancher's barn. Today's equivalent of good breeding would be a man who's family hasn't been featured on the Jerry Springer Show.

But what is it that we really expect from the opposite sex? It's something beyond Brad Pitt's boyish grin, George Clooney's mischievous eyes and Gregory Peck's smooth manner (not that any of those are a bad thing to want).

Maybe "expect" is too demanding a notion. Sometimes the best we can do is hope.

We can hope for a man who will be patient with all our faults - like our phobias of vacuuming, dusting and anything remotely related to the domestic goddess category.

We hope for a man who knows that the natural position of a toilet seat is down and not up.

We hope for a man who loves our cat at least half as much as he claims. (We're well aware that you blow razzberries at Mr. Fluffy when we're not home.)

We hope that when our cat dies, and we are feeling inconsolable, that your offer to take us to the mall means more than just dropping us off at the front entrance with a pat on the head.

We can hope for a man who doesn't retain bragging rights to the cornucopia of sounds this his body emits.

We not only hope, but we pray, for a man who's idea of pitching woo isn't bellowing across the room, "Hey, why don't you come over here and sit on my lap so we can talk about the first thing that comes up!"

Maybe I hope for too much and expect too little.

What I should expect is a man who will stand by me in spite of my self doubts. One who's willing to learn and grow with me. I want a man who isn't afraid to take risks. I'm not talking David Blaine hanging in a glass box risks. I'm talking about someone who isn't afraid to put it all out there for the world to see. Someone who lays his worth on the line - exposed and naked.

I want the world -- but I want it with someone by my side who wants it too. That's a lot to expect.

Given the choice of having the world alone or not having it at all... I expect of myself to choose the world alone.
