By Chris Rempel Accepting credit cards can be a very intimidating option to consider as a sole practitioner or small-firm attorney - if you deal with collecting retainers from your clients... The word merchant service has developed an almost ominous connotation among solo professionals and for good reason. Most people associate the phrase with ludicrous fees, minimum transaction volumes, equipment rentals and restrictive contracts. And all too often, that notion is entirely justified. In fact, several professionals simply choose to forget about accepting credit cards altogether - because its just one less hassle to deal with. Unfortunately, this can actually cost them quite a bit of business, whether they realize it or not. Its been continually proven that providing your customers the option of paying with credit will increase sales (in this case, client volume) in practically every industry. Furthermore, the main advantage for an attorney to accept credit cards wouldnt so much be an increase in client volume as it would eliminate waiting for checks in the mail not to mention having someone make a bank run to get them deposited. And credit card payments dont bounce either! The truth is that while there actually are some very affordable (and flexible) services available to solo professionals, theyre also very few and far between. And in most cases, theyre not easy to recognize. So lets explore some of the terms and terminology of the merchant industry so as to de-mystify the process of choosing a merchant company that will effectively suit your practice Statement Fees: Most merchant account providers will charge you to simply receive your billing statement. This normally costs $10.00 per month. This is, for the most part, a pointless fee for the purpose of generating additional revenue for the merchant company as it much more than covers the cost of distributing a statement although, not all companies have a statement fee. Monthly Minimums: Several programs include a minimum, which is not a minimum amount of sales volume, but rather its a minimum charge in regards to transaction fees. This will range from 1.95% to 5.95%, depending on the nature of the service. The Cancellation Fee: The majority of merchant services do utilize a minimum term of duration within their account contract. To cancel the contract before its term has expired will cost anywhere from $95.00 to $250.00, sometimes more. Equipment Lease or Purchase: In general, youre required to either lease or buy the (expensive) equipment needed to process credit card swipes. Leasing equipment can range from $29.00 to $79.00 per month, with an average term of 36 48 months. These leases cannot be cancelled. In addition, you will be paying the relevant state tax on those payments - and to top it off, most companies will charge an extra $3.00 per month or so for a Loss and Destruction waiver. At the end of the lease, you must either return the equipment in good condition, or you must purchase the equipment for at its current market value. The purchase price will be something like 15% of the aggregate lease payments (for a 36-month term). As you can clearly see, all of this can add up to a substantial amount of money - and if you do default on the equipment lease, it will show up on your credit report. Accepting credit cards doesnt seem too exciting at this point, does it? However, as I had mentioned previously, there are some affordable options within the merchant industry that actually cater directly to solo professionals and part-time business owners. For example, did you know that you can accept credit cards without any equipment at all by simply using your cell phone (or blackberry)? Not only is this type of system totally mobile, most of these services are uniquely affordable. Such services are able to bypass all the other fees because of the way that transactions are processed and the automated call-in system literally allows the vendor to authorize and process the payment in real time within a matter of seconds. Is it going to kill you? Probably not. So big deal. Get it done. Your fears are just a manifestation of your ego projected onto the world. Most things aren't as bad as you think. In other words, honesty is telling the truth and integrity is doing what you said you are going to do. Have integrity and be honest with yourself. Watch all of the self-destructive "white" lies you tell yourself each day. Walk big. If you don't believe it, no one else will. Only you determine where you go in life. Are you going to make the decisions or are they going to be made for you? Either way, a decision will be made. Quit being a victim and take charge. The world is filled with too many victims and cynics. Get off your ass and do something, make something happen. By Paul Guzman Generally speaking you should fertilize your lawn once in spring, summer and early fall.
Do not fertilize your lawn during the cold season months. However be sure to use a "winterizer" during the winter months. This should be done at least once but twice is ideal. Ask you local nursery for this type of "winterizer". Mowing your lawn:
Here is one question I get all the time. When do I mow my lawn? Here is my standard answer. Mow it when it needs it. Duh.
Always keep you mower blades sharp this helps the blades from recuperating much faster thus making it look much better and greener.
Also lift your mower blades up one notch after each mowing. Too low and the grass will look dull and brownish the higher the blades the better.
Below I will list the types of lawn grasses or sod for general landscaping design. But first the difference between grass and sod. Grass is sod and sod is grass. You can purchase bermuda, fescue, zoysia, and St. Augustine grass in sod form. You can also get them in seed form. Seed grass comes in well seeds. It is usually spread with a broadcast , handheld or dropdown spreader you can even do it
by hand but may come out in clumps. It works best with a broadcast spreader. Sod is commercially grown and usually cut to the buyers specifications.
You can purchase sod at a nursery or at a retail sod store. It comes in a mat size of about 16" by 45" for a total of 5sq ft. Bermudagrass - Has many uses and is what most folks use through out the desert southwest. It is very drought tolerant and will creep and grow during the summer season.
However you can control spreading with some of the hybrids below. Here are some varieties and descriptions of bermuda sod.
This type of grass/sod is drought tolerant, you can water about 1-2 times per week during the hot summer months. About 15 minutes on a sprinkler system. If you want it to look super I recommend once every other day during the hot summer months.
It can tolerate traffic and is perfect for the backyard. You should fertilizer at least once per month. There are several varieties to choose from and below is a list. Bermuda -Tifton is for home lawns, commercial fields, coarse & blends with common Bermuda. Bermuda -Tifgreen is for home lawns, commercial, putting greens and the blades are fine, low growing grass.
Bermuda -Tifway 419 used for lawns, commercial, fairways, medium blades.
Bermuda -Santa Ana used for home lawns, commercial, fields, medium type blades.
Bermuda -Texturf 10 Mostly used for home lawns, and have coarse blades.
Bermuda -Overseeded with perennial rye used for lawns, commercial , medium to fine blades. Overseeded means the perennial rye will look green thru the winter months but will go dormant during the summer season when the
Bermuda looks best. You can calculate how much sod or topsoil you need at: Sod Calculate Fescue - There are several varieties of fescue. This type of grass/sod is not drought tolerant but looks great almost year round wit additional watering. It will usually cost more in sod or seed form. Fescue Advantage known as Festuca arundinaceum, is a cool season, perennial grass which means it will stay green all year round.
Tall Fescue is actually Kentucky 31 variety and is a cool season grass but will do well during the hot summer months with ample watering.
Creeping or red Fescue, can be grown in single stands and prefers more shadier and cooler areas than most other cool season fescue grasses.
Hard Fescue likes shade and is drought & disease resistant and it likes higher elevation type environment. Usually not available at retail nurseries. .
