Anyone in the world By Vikki Scovell Cultural eating habits have altered to encourage almost permanent snacking. Our waist-lines are bearing the brunt of the advertising onslaught, and many people are caving in under the temptation of seemingly endless delicious snacking possibilities. We can make a stand and snack sensibly to keep ourselves energized, and of a healthy weight, but first we have to accept the first rule of snacking; our snacks need to be small. We have been led to believe that a packet of crisps that would happily fit in a bucket is an acceptably-sized snack (and almost necessary for TV watching); however a true snack is closer to something of the size that would neatly snuggle into your cupped hand. Over-consumption of the healthiest snacks will still lead to weight gain. The second rule of snacking is: be prepared. If you have things close at hand you will always be in a strong position, avoiding hunger pangs, temptations, or having to buy anything in a garage on a car journey. So this week, here are some snack essentials for your shopping list; clear out the problem foods from your desks, glove boxes and cupboards, and re-stock with better healthier snacks. Stuff for the fridge; Cook up a bowl of brown or wild rice (or some pasta) for the fridge (it will last for 3 days) then it is always there for emergency snacks and meals. Mix with roasted vegetables, freshly chopped raw veg (tomato, cucumber, onion, peppers, fresh herbs) or canned fish, to make many different variations of cold pasta/rice salad. Avoid mayo or dressings, use lemon juice, fresh herbs, or a little soy sauce. A small pot will serve as a filling snack. Try steaming apples and fresh or frozen blueberries or raspberries (near puddings in the freezer section of the supermarket), and then blend to make a delicious fat-free high-vitamin puree to store in the fridge for several days. Add to low-fat natural yoghurt as a little sweet snack or pudding or layer with oats for a scrummy breakfast or more filling snack. Prepare a container of thinly sliced vegetables; raw carrot, peppers, cucumber, celery, cauliflower, lightly steamed green beans, mange tout peas and baby corn. Dip in a little pot of hummus as a snack or light meal, or munch at your leisure on their own. A great way of increasing your daily intake of veggies, vitamins and antioxidants (cancer-fighters). Hard boil some eggs. Handy and filling; peel and squash onto a rice cake, or munch with some veggie sticks. Berries; any berries will do; keep them chilled, keep them handy, keep them away from me because I will eat the lot. Smoothies; pure fruit smoothies are a good snack option, avoid ones with added sugar, honey or yoghurt if you are watching your weight.
Having ready-to-eat things in the fridge will help guard against frenzied snack-finding missions. These things are also handy for throwing into little pots and taking to work or on outings; plan ahead to resist temptation. Stuff for the cupboard; Rice cakes (Kallo are a widely-available good brand). Avoid ones with artificial flavours or ones with a high salt content. Oat cakes; great for slow release energy, but remember the first rule of snacking; small amounts as they do contain fat. Eat with sliced cucumber, tomato, hummus, cottage cheese, a thin slice of lower-fat cheese or on their own. Dried fruit and nuts; dont over do them, but a palm-sized amount (no, not heaped) will offer energy and a rich source of nutrients and essential fats. Choose from Brazils, almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, dried mango (great also for kids), apricots, apple rings, and prunes. I choose organic dried fruit as it does not contain any preservatives. Malt loaf; a slice is a good alternative to cake if you HAVE to have something sweet. Tesco do an organic malt loaf which is low in fat; others may contain hydrogenated fats so watch out! Tinned fish; mash red salmon, sardines or tuna onto a piece of wholemeal toast or rice cake for a satisfying snack or light meal, packed with essential fats. Keep a well-stocked fruit bowl; throw a piece of fruit in your bag wherever you go. Bananas are unbeatable, and provide a mood-boosting ingredient to keep you smiling at work. Team a banana with an oatcake to give longer-lasting energy. Stuff for the Kids (and grown-ups too) Bread sticks (better than crisps). Watermelon smiles (I mean slices). Small bananas (they look kid-friendly). Little packets of raisins (high in sugar so keep teeth well-brushed). Dried fruit and nut mix-up. Small yoghurts (Yeo Valley Organics have free spoons to collect at the moment) All fruit and veg cut into small pieces. Popcorn; make your own, using less oil than stated, serve up in small paper bags; so cheap and easy. Anyone in the world By Alex Kaplan Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) was developed in the 1980s for the treatment of photo-damaged skin. Unlike laser devices that use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses a xenon flashlamp to generate intense pulses of broadband light at very high energy. Filters are used in the IPL device to restrict the actual wavelengths that are emitted. Thus, various IPLs have been developed with a range of filters depending on the application that the machine is used for. For instance, a filter that lets out light of a shorter wavelength would be expected to treat melanin in sunspots, while a longer wavelength filter would let through light that would tend to heat collagen and penetrate more deeply to stimulate collagen remodeling. IPL has gained great popularity through its application for the photofacial. This is generally a quick and relatively painless office procedure. Patients with sun damage in the form of sun spots / age spots, abnormal redness and sallow skin tone stand to benefit the most from the treatment. Additionally there are benefits for superficial wrinkles and other textural problems. Unlike lasers that are used for skin resurfacing, such as the CO2 laser, IPL is better tolerated and has fewer side effects. Typically it is administered as a series of 4-6 treatments with incremental results from each visit. Common side effects include redness and roughness of the skin that may last up to a week. Contrast this with treatments by lasers used for resurfacing, such as the CO2, that can leave denuded skin that requires prolonged healing and carry a higher risk of scarring. As with other lasers that target melanin, darker-skinned patients are not good candidates for IPL. The increased baseline melanin in darker skin creates a stronger background target for the light and increases the risk of a burn. If the skin is too dark, then the therapeutic window may be too narrow to expect good results. An ideal candidate is one who is fair-skinned but who has significant photodamage, usually from years of sun exposure. More recently, a novel approach to facial rejuvenation has arisen that combines light sources, such as IPL, with photosensitizers that increase the effect of the light. This is termed photodynamic therapy. The most commonly available photosensitizer in the US is 5-amino levulinic acid (5-ALA). 5-ALA was previously described with the use of a light source for treatment of actinic keratoses on the face. Subsequently, it was shown that 5-ALA could be combined with IPL to increase the effectiveness of photorejuvenation. This showed significantly increased benefit for fine lines and pigmentation. 5-ALA is applied to the skin for at least 30 minutes prior to the procedure and allowed to soak in. After treatment with IPL, the patient may experience more redness and scaling than with IPL alone. Furthermore, strict sun avoidance and protection is required for 48 hours since the 5-ALA remains within the skin and can increase redness and discomfort if the skin is exposed to sunlight. Also, commercially available 5-ALA, marketed as Levulan Kerastick, costs approximately $100 per application. On the other hand, the increased effectiveness of photodynamic therapy makes the addition of 5-ALA an attractive option. Further research is constantly being pursued in this popular area of laser and light source technology. Already, companies have combined additional technologies with IPL. Syneron, for instance, has added bipolar radiofrequency with the idea of enhancing the IPLs effect. Aesthera, has combined suction with broad-band light to increase effectiveness. This is done because undiluted oils either natural or synthetic contain high concentrations of volatile components that will likely result in allergic reactions and possibly injury when applied directly to skin or clothing. Dilutions of the fragrance oil can be done using solvents such as jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, and wax. The most common solvents for fragrance oil dilution is ethanol or a mixture of ethanol and water. The percent of perfume oil by volume in a perfume is listed as follows: Perfume: 20%-40% Fragrance compounds Eau de parfum (EDP) : 10-30% Fragrance compounds Eau de toilette (EDT) : 5-20% Fragrance compounds Eau de cologne (EDC) : 2-3% Fragrance compounds. As the percentage of fragrance compounds decreases, the intensity and longevity of the scent decrease. It should be noted that different perfumeries or perfume houses assign different amounts of oils to each of their fragrances. As such, although the oil concentration of a fragrance in eau de parfum (EDP) dilution will necessarily be higher than the same fragrance in eau de toilette (EDT) form, the same trends may not necessarily apply to different perfume compositions with different perfume houses. To further complicate things, some fragrances with the same product name but having a different concentration name may not only differ in their formulas, but actually use different perfume oil mixtures altogether. For instance, in order to make the EDT version of a fragrance brighter and fresher than its EDP, the EDT oil may be modified to contain slightly more top notes or less base notes. If I am over 20% body fat, is it ok to do longer duration cardio until I get down closer to the 10-12% range? Also, my knees are bad and squatting and lunging kill. Thanks for the email. I am not totally against the longer duration cardio if a client's body fat is still high (i.e. above 20% for a male). However, I still strongly believe that it rates 3rd on the effectiveness/priority of methods for getting down to 10% body fat. 1 - Nutrition 2 - Intervals/resistance training 3 - Traditional cardio As each person's results are individual, I can't accurately predict how much this extra cardio is going to help you with the fat loss. But there is only one way to find out. Give it a try. So let's just give it a 4 week trial though. Let me know how you plan to fit it into your sessions. I prefer adding it on to the end of an interval session (therefore, this interval session is done on a non-weights day). Let me know your plan. And for your knees, well, the exercises to stick to are Romanian Deadlifts, lying hip bridges, stability ball leg curls, and limited-range (pain free) split squats, and limited-range (pain free) squats. Only go through a range of motion that does not cause pain (and this goes for any exercise). If it hurts the knees, stop. Your knees should get better with weight loss. "If I am such a nice person, why is my spouse frequently angry at me? If I am such a good parent, why is my teenage son rude and disobedient? It must be that there is something wrong with them and that is why they are hurting me." This is a very common way of thinking. Thinking like this, "Bad things that happen to me are undeserved. I am a good person and this isnt fair!" depicts a useless way of thinking. If a person starts out by thinking that they are perfect and without responsibility, i.e., a "good person," there is then little likelihood that they will search for how their own behaviour has helped to create a particular problem or situation. Rather, thinking that one is personally innocent, and only a victim, will lead to blaming everyone else for all personal problems and thereby precludes any opportunity to work toward a solution. A better way of responding to something that is "bad" is by asking the question, "How have I contributed to this happening to me?" Then one can proceed to honestly and sincerely look for an answer. When personal responsibility is accepted, at least for part of the problem, then there becomes an opportunity to create positive change. The following examples depict taking responsibility and asking how one contributed to the problem: A husband asked his wife why she seemed to always be angry with him. She told him that he frequently treated her harshly and she felt he "bull dozed" over her. A father asked his son why he was rude and disobedient. He explained that he was constantly being nagged for every little thing and felt unaccepted for who he was. A wife asked her husband why he works late every night. He told her that he was frightened by her "angry moods" and was trying to avoid her. A mother asked her five-year-old daughter why she continually tried to avoid doing homework. The little girl said she felt Astupid.@ Mom asked her what made her feel that way. The girl explained because she was the "slowest" reader in the class. By asking the question correctly, "What is my part in this problem," you can get an answer that is useful. The answer to this question can lead to appropriate action that can be part of a solution. For example, the above questions, with regards to Xone=s personal responsibility for the problem, can lead to the following solutions: The husband learned to be gentle and sensitive to his wife. The father learned to give his son more autonomy. The wife learned how to control her anger. The girl got tutoring for her reading and began enjoying school and willingly did her homework. However, for many people, asking the right question and then hearing the answer, is very difficult. The reason is because admitting that one is at least in part responsible for a problem requires inner strength and self-confidence. People who are insecure have a need to defend themselves and they do this by always insisting they are right and everyone else is wrong. If one is already hurting inside because of low self-esteem, admitting a mistake is like pouring salt on an open wound. It is important to try to understand how one contributed to a relationship problem in order to correct it. To be able to do this requires health self-esteem. The most direct way to build healthy self-esteem, if it is lacking, is by directing positive affirmations toward oneself. This means, deflecting negative self-criticism and replacing it with positive and comforting beliefs and thoughts about oneself. If a person=s self-esteem is severely injured, it may be necessary to seek the assistance of a properly trained and caring mental health professional. By healing oneself, one will also contribute to the healing of one's primary relationships. Introspection and self-truth are necessary for healthy relationships. When something goes wrong in a family relationship, the first thought should be, "How have I contributed to this problem?" This then becomes a significant first step toward a possible solution.
