Do Christians Get Depressed?
by breena shutler - Tuesday, 8 January 2008, 05:40 AM
Anyone in the world

By Sonya Triggs What does the Bible say about depression? Is it okay to be a Christian and still get depressed? And what exactly is depression, anyway? First, what exactly is depression? WebMD defines it as A clinical mood disorder associated with low mood or loss of interest and other symptoms that prevent a person from leading a normal life. Merriam-Websters Collegiate Dictionary has an even more eye-opening definition: a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies. And if that doesnt make it clear, I dont know what does! So, do Christians get depressed? The short answer to that is Yes. The Bible is filled with a lot of people who got depressed! The prophet Elijah experienced his own depression very shortly after experiencing a major victory with God. Elijah held a competition himself against 450 prophets of Baal! to prove the might of God. After a lot of storm and drama, God proved Himself to be the Only True God and Elijah experienced a major personal victory. The queen at the time -Jezebel - was very unhappy about this and threatened Elijahs life. Elijah became frightened and ran for his life. After coming to the end of his (physical) rope (in the wilderness), he stopped and started to feel very badly for himself. 1 Kings 19:4 says Elijah, .begged for his life, that he might die. And he said, It is enough, O LORD, take away my life. For I am no better than my fathers. (MKJV). Elijah was definitely depressed (the entire story can be read in 1 Kings 19:1-18). Even one of Israelites Great Deliverers, Joshua the Son of Nun, experienced a down time. Joshua had led the Israelites to a resounding victory against Jericho. The Israelites then went to war against Ai and experienced a bitter defeat. Joshua 7:6-7 says And Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust on their heads. And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, why have You at all brought this people over Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? And, oh that we had been content and lived on the other side of Jordan! (MKJV). Joshua was a very unhappy man. What I find most interesting about these situations, however, is how God responded to Elijah and Joshua. God sent an angel to minister to Elijah after hed stopped in the wilderness, who provided him with food encouraged him to eat and drink. Elijah then took a 40-day journey to Mt. Horeb where God Himself spoke to him. God asked Elijah What are you doing here, Elijah? (1 Kings 19:9 MKJV) and Elijah has this pity party where he tells God how he had been zealous for Him and Elijah was now the only prophet left and how they were trying to kill him! God gave Elijah instructions to carry out and then promptly informed him, Yet I have left seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed to Baal...(1 Kings 19:18 MKJV). In other words, that Elijah had no business being depressed because he was not, in fact, the only prophet of God left. He also got the opportunity to speak to God one-on-one, as God passed by him and spoke to him in a still, small voice. God had a different response for Joshua. Joshua 7:10 says, And the LORD said to Joshua, Get up! Why do you lie on your face this way? (MKJV). God explained to Joshua that the Israelites had been defeated because they had sinned against Him. But that now, it was time to Get Up!, fix the problem and return to their warfare against the people of Ai. What is reassuring about both of these situations is not only the fact that God heard Elijahs and Joshuas cries to Him, but that He responded. He met them right where they were and gave them hope and instructions for how to carry on. He didnt leave them in the middle of their hopelessness He took control and gave them a renewed sense of purpose and direction. So, do Christians get depressed? Sure but they dont usually stay depressed. One thing is for certain Christians will encounter many situations which will challenge their optimism. Jesus himself promised us In the world you shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer. (John 16:33 (MKJV). And why should we be of good cheer? Because Jesus also reminded us that I have overcome the world. In other words, there is no need for us to remain down or out (or even surprised by the frequency of our troubles), because Jesus has already solved any problems we will encounter. Yes, God does hear your cry when you are depressed, and will comfort and minister to you (as well as give you guidance), but, ultimately, our victory happened right there on Calvary when Jesus died on the cross for us. We can rest assured knowing that we will eventually come to a place where all trials and tribulations will be over, all tears will be wiped away and we will have eternal rest and peace with our Father. So thats why we must recapture our joy when we're down and make a serious effort to remain in good spirits at all other times. So what should you do if you find yourself in the throes of depression? Paul lays it out for us in Philippians 4:4-13. First, he tells us to let God know about our worries - through prayer and supplication. To make our requests known to God with our thanks (for hearing, for responding, for whatever we can think of!). And then he promises us that peace will be ours. And to maintain that peace, he tells us to think on good things! Good things only. He says .whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report, if [there be] any praise, think on these things. (KJV - emphasis mine) This doesnt mean you have to adopt a Pollyana view of the world that nothing bad is going on or that you dont have a good reason to be down. Instead, it means that you CHOOSE to maintain a positive attitude, knowing that God has it all under control. It means that you CHOOSE to let God deal with it instead of wrestling around with it in your own mind. And, finally it means you CHOOSE to believe God instead of all the rotten things that are going on around you. Paul last of all reminds us that we can do all things because Jesus strengthens us. So, its not a matter of relying on your own strength, but on the strength of the Almighty. And He will never let you down. So, dont worry if you get depressed (occasionally) - just try your best not to stay depressed. Remember that God hears your prayers (and will respond) and that His peace will keep you through it all if you let Him. So think good thoughts, turn your cares over to Him and choose to believe in Gods word instead of the world. You will be blessed! Sonya C. Weight Loss Programs

Anyone in the world

By Jimmy Sturo Weight loss programs are a popular option for people who want to shed pounds rapidly in a safe manner. Over eight million Americans enroll in such programs every year. Most weight loss programs are a careful mix of a balanced diet and regular and planned exercise. Most weight loss programs provide a counselor who may be contacted via phone or Internet to answer personal questions. They also provide advice as to how weight loss may be maximized. These programs mainly focus on balanced nutrition. Several options are available which are actually customized according to special needs of clients, including diabetics, the obese, or people with high blood pressure. It must be borne in mind that several weight loss programs tend to make exaggerated claims and advertising should not be the only criteria for deciding upon a weight loss program. The Federal Trade Commission brought action against several weight loss programs that are offered challenging their claims, yet each day new programs make their way unchecked into the market. A person interested in losing weight should therefore have his/her concerns answered to his/her satisfaction before adopting a program It is generally believed that most weight loss programs are unable to provide long term weight control and therefore a the past record of a particular program must be taken as the main criteria for its adoption. Many programs, on the other hand, in view of their un-optimized diet plans can course serious health damage. One therefore needs to select a program that is reputed to be healthy and effective. Usually, the best option would involve healthy eating regime along with a plan for regular physical activity. Antique Engagement Rings
by breena shutler - Saturday, 5 January 2008, 12:33 AM
Anyone in the world

By Johnny Moon For many couples nowadays, the antique engagement ring is becoming the best choice. Not only are they less expensive, but they also generally have better craftsmanship and are more likely to become an heirloom to future generations. Antique engagement rings have an inherent smell of charm and sense of individuality. An antique engagement ring is a ring that is over 50 years of age. Sometimes the word antique is used interchangeably with vintage so its often the case when one person is talking about an antique engagement ring and the other is talking about a vintage engagement ring they may actually be talking about the same thing. There are different styles of antique engagement rings based on different eras or time. The Victorian Antique engagement ring which dates back to 1835-1900 are engagement rings set on a yellow or rose gold color. It boasts simplicity and elegance in designs but it also often has more intricate craftsmanship than many modern rings. The classic Tiffany six-prong engagement diamond ring belongs to this era. Following this era is the Edwardian antique engagement ring era that took place from 1900-1920. This is the time when Platinum became a massive hit for engagement rings instead of the very colorful yellow or gold rose of the Victorian age. Sapphires became very popular in this era. From 1920-1930, the Art Deco engagement rings became a worldwide hit. In this era the engagement rings have a streamlined, geometric look. The Art Deco rings are at present the most sought-after antique engagement rings for newlyweds. When buying an antique engagement ring, one should remember to be careful about softer stones like Opal, Emerald, and Pearl as a primary gem on the ring or an accent, as these easily break and may contain damages on the inside when not carefully checked. In addition, one should consider the craftsmanship of the ring when purchasing it. When on a tight budget but considering a better and bigger diamond, it is wise to consider buying an antique engagement ring circa 1930-1940. The diamonds on these rings create a larger size illusion with its elaborately carved settings. If you are curious about the history of diamond engagement rings, the earliest surviving record of an Antique Diamond Engagement Ring being given was in 1477 from Archduke Maximillian of Hamburg to Mary of Burgundy. Which Marketing Solution is Right for You?
by breena shutler - Thursday, 3 January 2008, 02:26 AM
Anyone in the world

By Jane Hendry If you're running a small business, then at some point you may be faced with the problem that you want to gear up your marketing in order to grow the business, but at the same time you're afraid of getting it wrong and losing whatever you invest in it. Whilst large businesses can afford to throw large amounts of money at campaigns, and absorb the losses if their marketing doesn't work, small businesses need a return on every pound they spend. They need some level of certainty that the money and effort they invest is going to produce good results. Otherwise, what can happen is that they keep doing what they're already doing (which probably isn't working that well), or they blow a load of money on advertising or marketing solutions that don't work, and then lose faith in outside help or marketing altogether. If you want to avoid wasting money on marketing and advertising, or getting burnt by marketing consultants then you'll want to minimise your risks and invest your money in solutions that work for you. As you read this article you'll discover 5 options for learning how to do your own marketing or recruiting outside help, and the advantages and disadvantages of each option. 5 Options for Learning Marketing Skills or Getting Help with Marketing 1) Learn how to do it yourself through reading books, attending workshops, using audio programmes etc. The obvious advantage of this is that it's the cheapest option, plus as you learn to do things for yourself, you retain control of your marketing programme. However, the major drawbacks are that the learning curve is very steep and it may take a long time to learn what works, plus you may end up learning a lot of generic information that doesn't directly apply to your business or that doesn't give you an actual step by step plan. You may learn what to do, but not how to do it or the exact steps you need to take to implement what you've learnt. 2) Use a marketing consultant/agency The advantage of this is that you effectively hand over the problem to someone else who deals with it on your behalf, leaving you to get on with what you do best. The disadvantages of this option are that you don't learn what works for your business and you are no longer fully in control of your marketing function - so you won't know why some things work and others don't. Also, this is probably the most expensive option, and some marketing consultants have got a tendency to prescribe their pet solution, before even diagnosing the actual problem and the situation. Not only that, but if your problem is, for example, lack of sales, and you decide the solution is PR, and then hire a PR consultant, they will work to your brief. In other words, you've diagnosed the problem and precribed the solution. However, PR may not be the best solution to your problem, and a proper analysis of your target market and your current activities, budget and opportunities is required before forming the conclusion that a PR consultant is the answer. 3) Group coaching/training programmes The advantage of this is the lower cost plus regular classes and fieldwork that keep you on track. Some people will benefit from working in a group, especially as they learn from the experiences of others, and particularly if there is a "buddying" system in place. The disadvantage is the lack of personal coaching/consulting or significant input from the expert in examining your particular situation. Not only that, but you'll be going at a pace as dictated by the course outline, when you might want to move considerably faster or even slower. Also, most programmes go through a range of strategies as decided by the programme creator, some (or many) of which are not applicable to your particular situation. This is especially true if the programme is designed for the generic "small business" - what works for a dry cleaning business may not work for a consultant, coach or professional. The result is that you may be learning 10 or 12 strategies at a rather superficial level, rather than homing in on the 2 or 3 strategies that are really going to deliver results into your business, and which are manageable. 4) One to one business/marketing coaching The advantage of this is the personal attention, and the ability to address your specific issues. This works out a little more expensive than a group training programme, but less expensive than hiring a consultant. How this works varies widely and a lot depends on whether the coach is using a coaching model (i.e. they guide you in working out your own solutions) or a marketing model (they take on a role more similar to a consultant than a coach, and tell you what will work for your situation). Most do not seem to offer any structure, specific outcomes, or programme of activities so it can be hard to tell what you're getting for your money. 5) A Structured Programme of consulting, training and mentoring delivered one to one In this scenario the consultant uses a structured series of exercises to analyse the client's situation, help them build their marketing foundation, overcome problems and obstacles standing in their way and works with them to create a series of marketing actions that will work best for them. This typically costs about the same as marketing coaching, but has more tangible outcomes and the consultant will also be doing things on the client's behalf in between sessions. The advantages are that the client is fully in control of their own situation and is being guided and taught how to do things for themselves. The consultant will also use their expertise to steer the client towards solutions that will work for their situation, their market and their type of business, and filter out approaches that are irrelevant or less likely to produce good results. The disadvantages are that you still have to do the work yourself (unless you pay for help with implementation), and if the consultant is helping you to craft your message and build your foundation, then there may be a delay before any strategies get fully implemented. This is really the approach that is analogous to building your house on rock rather than on sand - it takes a little longer to lay the foundations, but it's a sturdier, stronger solution in the end. 2006 Jane Hendry, Attractioneering Jane Hendry helps professionals, consultants and coaches to create marketing systems that easily and consistently attract their ideal clients. Why You Should Keep the Price Negotiation and Auto Loan Separate
by breena shutler - Tuesday, 1 January 2008, 09:47 PM
Anyone in the world

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Brooke_Sikula]Brooke Sikula When purchasing a new or used car, there is a great temptation to shop based on monthly payment alone. After all, you probably already have a good idea of how much you can afford to pay each month, and it is all too easy to simply allow the car dealer to tailor a deal based on that amount. It is almost always a mistake, however, to let the monthly payment be your only guide. Doing so can be quite dangerous, and quite costly. Many dealers will artificially inflate the price of the car, or the interest rate, while making the calculation, and even if the dealer does not do this, it is probably possible to strike a better deal by treating the car price negotiation and the car financing negations as two separate entities. In most cases it is a good idea to negotiate the price of the car first, and it is always preferable to negotiate based on the dealers invoice price rather than on the sticker price on the window. Negotiating the price up from what the dealer paid, rather than down from the price on the sticker, almost always yields better results. Fortunately, it is easier than ever in these internet days to know what the dealer actually paid for the car. There are literally hundreds of web sites that provide information on dealer prices, and chances are you can find that price in a matter of minutes. After you have struck the best possible deal on the price of the car you want, then, and only then, should you discuss financing options. It is important to ask the dealer to fully disclose the interest rate, and the loan terms, when negotiating financing for the car. The interest rate is the primary consideration with any loan product, whether the car loan comes from the dealer or from another lender. It is also a good idea to shop elsewhere for financing before accepting the offer made by the car dealer. While dealer financing can often be a good deal, it is important to compare the loan you are being offered with what you could get on your own. It is a good idea to check with your own bank, credit union or savings and loan, either before or after you visit the dealer. The more auto loan offers you have to choose from, the better your chances of getting the best possible deal. Why Diets And Exercise Don't Work For Belly Fat
by breena shutler - Tuesday, 1 January 2008, 07:34 AM
Anyone in the world

By Eric Berg Your belly fat might not be coming from the food you eat. Not all fat is the same because certain body shapes come from different sources. When hormones get stressed a person can start to accumulate fat in the midsection as described in Dr. Bergs new book called, The 7 Principles of Fat Burning. Dr. Berg states the main reason why the body accumulates fat (or potential energy) in the stomach has to do with the bodys survival mechanism reacting to stress. This is how it works; Under stress the body doesnt burn fat. Instead it burns sugar explaining why cravings to carbohydrates are so common. After sugar gets used up, the body burns its protein reserves muscles, not fat. This is the adrenal glands at work, forcing the body to break down muscle protein; first in the legs (thigh muscles) and next in the buttocks. Hormones are re-directing the muscles into fat in the belly. This why so many people with sagging bellies have weak knees and legs while climbing stairs. The body is attempting to survive by storing fat around the vital organs, which just happen to be in your stomach. Dr. Berg describes one of the body types as the adrenal (pendulous hanging abdomen) in his book. Anyone can receive a free body type quiz on his web site. Because any and all stress worsens the adrenals (stress gland), exercise is too much stress. Adrenal body types who exercise too much actually gain weight. In fact, their legs get skinnier as their bellies get fatter. Dieting, cutting calories or being hungry also adds stress to the body worsening the condition. This is from the stress hormone called cortisol. Another interesting fact is that your adrenal hormones are made from cholesterol. Reducing dietary fats and cholesterol is very bad for the adrenal glands due the necessary raw material needed to build adrenal hormones. To get more information, go to www.bergdiets.com and take the free body type quiz. Dr. Eric Berg, 18-year-veteran chiropractor specializing in nutritional research, has made breakthrough discoveries that isolate key principals in his new book The 7 Principles of Fat Burning. He has delivered over 2400 seminars and workshops to doctors and patients. In his book, Dr. Berg goes well beyond dictating a traditional counting-calories-and-exercise regimen, giving the reader a thorough understanding of how the body burns fat through the triggering of fat burning hormones. The Healing Arts: Exploring Heart-Consciousness, Part 1; The Poets Know It
by breena shutler - Monday, 31 December 2007, 04:24 AM
Anyone in the world

By Russ Reina For as long as there have been poets there have been voices telling us that the heart is a seat of consciousness. For as long as Anyone has received a message from the God that created them they have reported back to us to listen to your hearts. Each train of religious thought references the heart as a vehicle for discernment. Ever see what the Dalai Lama does when he replies I see. or, I understand!? Why, he looks you right in the eyes and places his hands over his heart. Does he know something we dont? How could he? Everybody and their Aunties have been telling us as long as weve had ears that the heart has a greater place in our consciousness than we allow ourselves to embrace. It hasnt always been like this. Somewhere along the line, though not exactly discredited, the thought of living within and using the consciousness of the heart took a major back seat to, well, the thought that the brain is the center of our ability to receive, process and assimilate information. Lyrically, all the information is there. In fact, the concept is a part of our shared human experience, regardless the language, custom or orientation. Whats exciting is that today, science is beginning to cut loose and reveal to us empirically what we have always known -- in our hearts, of course! Dr. Joseph Chilton Pearce, a pioneer in the distillation of scientific research as it is applied to human development (and especially childhood education) is the author of The Crack in the Cosmic Egg, Exploring the Crack in the Cosmic Egg, Magical Child, Magical Child Matures, Bond of Power and Evolution's End. He has been gathering information from scientific studies around the globe that provide strong evidence that heart-consciousness is much more than just a metaphor. There is more than enough data available to begin using what has been learned and to begin to apply it to real-life experience. Much of my own distillation process I owe to the work of Dr. Pearce, who has given me permission to share information based on his lecture materials. We hear of test-tube babies. In reality, thats only where they get their very first start. Unless the fertilized egg is implanted into the womb of a mother-host very soon, it will die. Why? Because this new organism cannot become viable until, literally, the spark of life is passed on to it from another living organism of its kind. Life itself, the spark of life of which we all share, has been received by the offspring as passed on through the mother back to humankinds first ancestor. The electromagnetic field, which lives inside the mother activates the pulse of the newborn. That pulse is taken on by a clump of cells in just about the center of the new organism. But do you know what these cells are? Science has named them atrial-neural cells: cells that have the capability of functioning as either heart (beating - atrial) cells, OR Brain (information processing neural) cells. This is no tiny concept, but theres a cute little visual that hammers it all home. After a period defined by phenomenally rapid cell-division within the developing organism, a number of beating atrial-neural cells "migrate" in two tiny streams (like horns growing out of a head) from that central clump to a position closer to the outer edge of the organism. There, they come together to grow to become the organ that we know as the brain. Think about this a moment: The brain actually comes from the heart. It is, in fact, an extension of it. Now feel this for a moment. If you cant differentiate between thinking about the concept and being able to feel the experience of it, dont worry, youll be getting some tools to help you sharpen your abilities. But the whole thing gets even juicier, because something more interesting develops. After a while, the cells that coalesce into what we call the brain stop streaming, stop beating and begin to differentiate into cells that specifically take on the function of information processing. But about 65% of the heart cells in your chest this very moment continue to function as neural (information processing) cells! In a nutshell, atrial-neural cells that migrate to form the brain forget about beating and go about the process of information assimilation. Their siblings, who stayed at home, continue to beat, but theyre also processing and assimilating information. Between now and the next part of this series, spend some time with this concept. Allow yourself to sense, if you can, the part of you that lies in the center of your chest that is, indeed, taking in information and distributing it. The next installment will offer you some clues and cues that will help you to become more familiar with the wonders of your heart, your most potent ally. Networking You know that person that seems to know everybody...and when they send you a lead, idea or connection of some kind, you know this will be time well spent. Most people understand that networking, or their network, is an important asset when something is needed. The opportunity to help has gotten even easier because of the Internet and online communities like www.linkedin.com and Your Brand Forum at www.yourbrandplan.com/forum. Dictionary.com says networking is to interact or engage in informal communication with others for mutual assistance or support. Mutual is the key word in this definition. Actually, the effective networker is less about themself and more about the other person. The commonly used term "bank balance" networking makes a lot of sense and is easy to say, but most people make a withdraw at a time of need and may help only when asked to make a connection. Our great collaborators are always networking - proactively connecting those who can benefit from the awarded relationship. Effective networking is more about asking great questions and learning about the other party. Learning about character and what is important to someone. Building a reputation on great connections on fit is the best way to realize great assistance from your network in return. Trust and awareness become even better terms to define networking. Yes, it takes time to establish trust and provide assistance to others before getting the assistance you deserve. It takes time to fill your account before making the withdraws in financial terms too. People want to help and will. It is a powerful brand to be in a position of trust to help others and you will be rewarded. Others want to be there for you and understand how to be effective in those recommendations. While providing appropriate connections and ideas for others, sprinkle in what your ideal customer or situation looks like - in the event they don't ask you... Become a Truck Driver: Career Tips to Make a Great Decision
by breena shutler - Saturday, 29 December 2007, 02:07 AM
Anyone in the world

By Joe Regan Most people tend to think that being a truck driver is not a job for them. However, those in the business know how interesting the work can be. A decision like this can have a great impact for your family especially if you have never been away from home. In this you can reach a salary of more than $35,000 per year. Trucking is an interesting job that allows for a lot of travel to different places around the country. To become a truck driver may look easy, but it is not as easy as it seems. You must first be trained in a driving school to get a CDL. This is a prerequisite that all companies have. However, many companies can provide this training as soon you start to work with them. You must also do some research about the services of the companies that interest you. Comparing information can be a useful thing to do as well. Here are some tips that can help you in this process of finding the right company for you. First, when searching for the right company, you should talk with different companies even before choosing a driving school. This is because some companies only hire students who have completed certified training programs that they approve of. It would also be a good idea to try to talk with the drivers and ask them about their jobs, their pay scale, the type of services offered, and figure out if that would be an interesting job for you. This way, you can find out about the requirements, the schools they will hire from, what regions they operate in and other things. Second, you can find out about the training programs. It is very important to know if the training program is certified, what types of companies come in to recruit at the school and what percentage of students are hired. Other useful information can include the schedules, how long it takes to obtain the license. Depending on your needs, you can make a list of priorities that will be matched by the schools. With all this information, you can make a more informed decision about the school of your choice. Remember that when you are applying for a job, you should not lie; the company can get most of your personal and job experience information. If they find something that does not match, they have the right to dismiss you from the company. When you fill out an online application, do not forget to complete all the required fields. Some of the requirements you will need are: employment history, social security card, CDL license, and your DOT physical card (the company may send you to their own physician). You always have to be sure to courteous. Some things you may need to ask are what the base pay is, whether it increases over time and the average of the miles per week to be expected. Once you pass all this process you will be ready to start a great job! Find great information
