Anyone in the world By Jeffrey Ryall Fly fishing is one of those sports where you get out what you put in.
If you put in a genuine effort you will get lots of fun and excitement from the sport.
Anyone who takes up fly fishing must have patience, be willing to practice their cast and be willing to learn about their chosen sport. You must be willing to learn new ideas and practice them, but not keep switching from one to another. Anyone doing this will not perfect anything, always changing one idea for another and not allowing getting anything right. The ones with knowledge about their tackle, the place they are fishing at and the fish they are trying to catch will have much more success than those who just turn up not knowing anything of what they are trying to do. There are more than 10,000 different types of flies and to find the best one for the job can be trial and error. As a rule you use bright flies on a sunny day and dark coloured flies on a cloudy or overcast day. The green butt skunk fly is mainly black with a bright green piece of yarn, these flies are used a lot for Salmon but also used around the world with good effect. The jock Scott is one of the best flies for most seasons and waters. This delicate fishing fly can take hours to make with lots of different materials involved. The thunder and lightening is a deep orange, gold, brown and black, perfect for cloudy or dark days and cloudy waters. This is one of the most popular fishing flies for catching salmon today. These are just a few of the most popular fishing flies used but you do not have to stick with these, if you find a fly that works for you then great. Dry fly fishing is when you cast your fly to a predetermined spot on the water and try to get the fish to attack the fly, but also trying to strike before the fish spits the fly back out. Wet fly fishing lets the fly sink just under the surface and passes by the fish causing the fish to strike at the fly. The most common fish to catch with a fly are salmon, trout and most fresh water fish. Below are some of the terms associated with fly fishing which may help you understand?
Pool an area of water where it is fast flowing and entering a deeper pool of water.
It offers good prospects of a variety of fish in the area where the water flows in. Riffle an area where the fast flowing water is broken up by some solid object in the water, the area just behind the object in the water is often good as insects will settle here and so will the fish. Dead water is as the name implies, very still with no current and not usually a good place to fish. Some of the other places to find fish is where there is a shady area or vegetation growing out of the water. Anyone in the world By Matthew Keegan Mary Valenti was looking forward with anticipation to her son, Joshua's, college graduation. As the grandchild of Italian immigrants, Joshua was soon to become the first member of the Valenti family to obtain a bachelor's degree in America. Mary was stunned when Joshua told her that he did not want to have a graduation party. Instead, he chose to spend a long weekend at the Jersey Shore with some college buddies. Ann Powers learned that her daughter, Chantel, was skipping her master's degree graduation program and heading off to Europe on a month long trip. Ann had already arranged a surprise graduation celebration bash with family members and friends at the local country club when Chantel produced airline and train tickets for her planned trip. John Cowens was happy that his son, Rick, finished technical school with honors. Rick, on the other hand, was disappointed that the family was marking the ocassion with only a cookout at home with a small group of family members. Clearly, he had expected more. All three of these situations underscores what sometimes happens when a loved one graduates from school: one family member or members expects something completely different than what another family member delivers. The fall out can result in family conflicts that will not be easily erased; the resultant damage can have lasting implications. Let's examine some steps that parents and their adult children should take before an important family milestone arises: 1. Communication Long before the graduation ceremony is scheduled, parents and their adult children need to discuss specific celebration plans. Assuming that one party or the other wants to mark or skip the event can be a huge mistake. Give voice to your thoughts; let nothing be taken for granted. 2. Expectations As parents, we can easily impose our will for our children upon them without considering their thoughts. Lest we forget, they are now adults and they should be able to make important decisions on their own. 3. Compromise Parents and their adult children, after airing their ideas [communication] and sharing their 'plans' for the event [expectations], must arrive at some point of compromise with each other. It may not be a story book resolution, but it should be something both parties agree to. Without some sort of compromise, ongoing conflict -- even just seething below the horizon -- can and will take hold. Now let's take a look at how each family implemented these techniques to resolve their own conflicts. Initially, Mary yelled and reminded Joshua that the family footed the bill for his college education. Joshua explained that he and his friends were worn out from final exams and were heading to the shore to unwind. After a heated argument, a compromise was reached when they agreed to have a family celebration the following weekend. Chantel Powers had no idea that her mother wanted to celebrate her master's degree and to such a lavish extent. Happy with her family's celebrations marking her high school and college graduations, Chantel thought a quiet family event would be held. Ann, on the other hand, was thrilled with Chantel's accomplishments and wanted to mark the ocassion with an "all-out, get-out" event. Mother and daughter reached a compromise for a smaller, but still important event to be held over the 4th of July weekend when many family members and friends would be present. Rick was disappointed with the low key celebration that his father had planned for his graduation. When he stressed to his father that he was not going to seek formal education beyond the associate degree level, his father upped his plans closer to what Rick had expected. In all three cases, communication gave voice to everyone's expectations which, when hashed out, resulted in compromise that everyone could manage. Congratulations, grads...you just achieved another important milestone! Matt writes extensively about business, travel, personal, and aviation issues. Anyone in the world By Eddie Tobey When brides choose their wedding flowers, one question they must ask themselves is: do I want real flowers, or silk? Traditional brides always go for real flowers. Their delicate beauty can never be duplicated by artificial flowers. The mesmerizing scent of roses or lilies is a far cry from the artificially scented silk flowers. Scent is often associated with feelings or memories and a wedding is an emotional and memorable experience. And that is where real flowers score over silk ones. Real flowers have their disadvantages, too. The main disadvantage with real flowers is their longevity. They wilt away very fast. Brides who want to preserve their wedding bouquets often settle for silk flowers. Moreover, brides who want exotic or out-of-season wedding flowers often opt for silk flowers because they are much more readily available and affordable. Silk flowers are also popular with brides who are allergic to real ones. No bride wants to be red-eyed and sneezing at her wedding. Silk flowers have advantages and disadvantages too. Although not the traditional choice, silk is fast becoming a popular option. Silk flowers look almost as natural as real flowers and brides dont have to worry about the availability of their preferred choice. Silk flowers are also much more affordable. Preservation of real flowers is very expensive, but not with silk. They always look as good as new. Thus, both real and silk flowers have their positive and negative points. It depends on the bride to choose between them, according to her priorities. Anyone in the world By Craig Ballantyne Last year I started working with 2 online clients, JM & GB, both over 350 pounds. Each needed my help badly. But it was quickly apparent which guy would succeed and which would fail. And there was nothing I could do to help the failure. Can you pick the success story? JM filled out his feedback form immediately. I had to ask GB twice to send his back. JM started providing daily feedback on his workouts and nutrition, just as I asked. And he continued to fill in his fitday.com eating plan everyday for the last month. The last time I heard from GB was 7 days after we started emailing...and he still had not started the workout plan yet. It's not surprising that JM lost 7 pounds in one month, and GB, well, who knows how much more weight he gained last month? I don't hear from him anymore... As frustrating as GB's failure was, JM's success highlights the importance of one often forgotten aspect of a successful program. Accountability. Research from Stanford University has shown that being accountable to a health professional increases the success rate in a fat loss program. And I see this all the time with clients and magazine readers that contact me after reading my articles in Men's Health and Women's Health magazines. I encourage people to keep me up to date on the progress. And who succeeds? The people I hear from on a consistent basis. The people I don't hear from? Well, they come back a couple months later and tell me how they fell off the wagon, stopped working out, started eating poorly, etc. Why does this happen? Because they are not accountable to anyone. They set their standards too low. So I know that if I don't hear form u, then most oftentimes you are in fat loss trouble. Now in a perfect world, we'd all have an expert trainer to report to in person. If you can't do that, you can at least get strength and interval workouts done and report back to me. Heck, you can even do what the good folks at this website have done and start posting your workouts for me to review. And then there is the next best thing. Get a workout partner, or group of friends and have them hold you accountable - commit to them that you will train and eat according to your goals. Why not take time each week get togethers to connect with a family member or friend that has the same goals...and you can be accountable to each other. You don't have to go it alone, CB Craig Ballantyne is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and writes for Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Maximum Fitness, Muscle and Fitness Hers, and Oxygen magazines. Anyone in the world By Dave Ouellette Fishing for Bass in the Kootenays is a popular pastime in this tourist destination area. Warm water lakes such as Wasa Lake and Jim Smith Lake near Cranbrook and Duck Lake near Creston have been producing quality largemouth and smallmouth bass for well over 30 years. BC bass fishing has never been better. Situated in the south-eastern part of the province the Kootenays about in wildlife and spectacular scenery. It is also a haven for those who stray the normal path of trout fishng and go for the Bronzers! There are plenty of opportunities to go fishing for smallmouth or largemouth in this world renowned wildlife area. Wasa Lake - East Kootenays: Well known for its warm waters, the Wasa area has become a real family vacation destination. Wasa Lake is not only a good bass fishery but a good perch fishery too. With a well maintained Provincial Park and other private camping / accommodation opportunities it's a great place for the family vacation and to enjoy oppotunities like water skiing, hiking, mountain bike riding, wildlife viewing and for the adventurous - hang-gliding.
Wasa is located about 50 km (30mi) from Cranbrook on Highway 93/95 is also close to the Bavarian Town of Kimberley and Historical Fort Steele. Fishing for Bass-Kootenays: Jim Smith Lake I think Jim Smith Lake was the first bass fishing lake that I experienced in British Columbia. I wasn't disappointed. Easily accessible from Highway 3 just east of downtown Cranbrook, Jim Smith is a residential lake area and has the good fortune of a Park to enhance your visit. There are nice sized largemouth bass in here. There are also large rainbow trout to be had. I remember hooking into a nice 6 lb fall rainbow just before dusk after having a successful afternoon using popper lures and plastic worms to stir the souls of the largemouth bass. Check your regulations regarding the power boat restrictions on this lake. Fishing for Bass-Kootenays: Duck Lake When it comes to numbers and size, Duck Lake is a strong contender for the title of best bass lake in BC. I fished Duck Lake back in the late 1970's, not long after the beginning development of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. Encapsulated within a series of dykes, Duck Lake sits at the south end of Kootenay Lake and adjacent to the Kootenay River. The lake is best accessed from Hwy 3A at Sirdar or from Duck Lake Road at Wyndell. Stop by the local gas station for best access locations. Duck Lake contains both large and smallmouth bass. The lake is quite shallow creating heavy milfoil vegetation in the lake which provides cover for the bass and the lake is quite shallow. Bass can be caught just about anywhere that the cover is available, including the middle of the lake. Surface lures or flies provide great action as well as shallow underwater techniques. The lake produces largemouth bass up to 10 lbs but the average is going to be about 2 - 3 lbs. Duck Lake is also part of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, considered a critical international wetland and migration route. There are NO POWER BOATS allowed on the lake, including electric motors. This protects the shoreline areas where the waterfowl breed and nest. Please fish with caution and consideration. Always check the regulations for openings, closings, limits and special restrictions Jim Smith and Wasa Lake Provincial Parks: Cranbrook Area Map - just point and click for your park of choice Region 4 - Kootenays - Fishing Regulations Dave Ouellette was an Engineering Tech with Ducks Unlimited Canada for 11 years. While constructing over 200 wetland segement in the Southern Interior of BC, Dave managed to fish almost as many lakes and streams in his travels. Anyone in the world By Lucien Beauley All of us shop on a more or less daily bases. We all look for the freshest in the produce we buy...since we all work hard for the wages we earn. These days, with nutrition becoming more and more of a priority, we are looking for the highest nutritional content, especially in fresh vegetable and fruit. Cereals have been fortified it seems since the beginning of time. On the contrary, (fresh)vegetable and fruit produce have not been so altered in this way. The question is...are they totally without any blemish, i.e., those we select are without bacterial contamination that has possibly festered since their original packaging immediately after picking ? The Department of Agriculture The U.S. Department of Agriculture uses every precaution so that there is an absolute minimum of bacterial contamination from the harvesting of any crop by multiple rinsing at the point of packaging to its destination...the consumer. Unfortunately, even with all of the many precautions taken from harvest to consumption, some contamination slips through the system. There is a way to virtually prevent this from ever happening,i.e., freezing and then shipping to market where the vegetables and fruit are then kept in that state until purchase. It has been found that if a par boiling and then a freezing process takes place immediately after washing of the produce, fruits and vegetables will last an extremely long period of time, some even many years and then when they are ready to be used, just defrosted and cooked. The whole idea is that any small amount of bacteria present at harvest will become dormant until the user is ready to consume them. In the news of late (September, 2006) has reported findings that some spinach was found to be contaminated with a strain of salmonella bacteria that has sickened several dozen people nationwide and thus far has been fatal for one individual. At the same time, it has been reported that similar episodes have been reported with lettuce in the recent past and that studies were being conducted in an attempt to lessen future lettuce source outbreaks. Whatever the outcome of the present studies by the U.S. government to find the exact source and to hopefully halt future outbreaks, there must be a safer source of our vegetables. As explained earlier, at least until this problem is resolved, frozen, packaged vegetables and fruit is a viable alternative solution. True, frozen vegetables do not possess the pliability of fresh, but most of our fresh vegetables, after being stored and shipped for great distances can loose some of their original potent nutrients, whereas our frozen counterpart looses very little. As far as is known, no one has ever been sickened by frozen vegetables...when properly cooked. Some food for thought. Anyone in the world By Tony Liddle Until recently I never really put much thought into all of the dogfish that I have caught over the years of hunting bass & panfish. While fishing with the great Eric Allee recently, I asked him, Eric, what were you referring to when you used the word "bowfin"? We agreed that he was talking about what I call Dogfish. People may call this interesting breed other names, such as grinnel, blackfish, brindle, mud fish, shoe pike, cypress bass, cypress trout, choupique, scaly cat, bugle mouth bass, German bass, brindle fish, and many more. The Bowfin(Amia Calva) can be found throughout a good portion of the US east of the Mississippi. They run the entire Mississippi River to Canada, east to Florida, and up as far along the coast as New York, but are found primarily in sloughs & ponds on the Mississippi River, her tributaries, and backwaters. Bowfin is a prehistoric fish that dates back 180 million years. Dogfish have many unique characteristics that intrigue people today. One of the most amazing qualities they possess is their ability to breathe air. Yes, I said breathe air. Unlike most fish, bowfin use their swim bladder like a lung to grab oxygen from the air, when oxygen levels become low in the stagnant, muddy, and vegetation rich nonmoving backwaters. Another unique aspect of these fish is that when they first strike your bait it is a subtle bite, followed by a normal fight. Half way into the battle they turn aggressive & unforgiving. At this point you are fooled into believing you have the biggest Bass of your life, especially after landing a few largemouth prior to this encounter. Once the Bowfin breaks the surface, excitement turns into disappointment in a matter of seconds. Males make the nest, watch over the eggs and infant fish until they reach 4-8 inches. The small fish school up, and the male Dogfish protects them the whole time. Their powerful jaws hammer anything getting in the way of their youngsters...even humans at times. Males also have a shorter life span, and are smaller than the females. Bowfin, have large dorsal fins which extend a good portion of their back all the way to their tail. Their tail is paddle shaped, and allows for great swimming, maneuvering, and rolling, as well as fighting when they're on the end of your line. There is a dark circle at the top of the tail that resembles an eye. Coloration varies between normal times to spawning periods. When not in spawn, they are darker & olive color. Their belly is usually an off-white shade, while their fins are bright green. When they spawn, they get an almost fluorescent glow to them, which is pretty beautiful. Dont let the description of exotic coloration fool you. These fish are still around today for a reason. Dogfish are tough and like to lie in most panfish and baitfish laden waters, which are prime honey holes for bass and panfish anglers. These fishermen are often fooled by the Bowfin's tremendous fight. Bowfin remind me of a cross between a beaver, snake, muskie, & catfish. They will eat almost any aquatic creature & strike at will when their nest or young are jeopardized. Theres a good chance that after landing a nice sized Bowfin your spinnerbait, or weapon of choice, has seen its last day in the water. Dogfish destroy anything that comes into contact with their mouths, fight harder than anything youve ever caught, and will tear some meat loose from your body if youre not careful. Their head is large and flat at the top, consisting of a double skull of bone and cartilage. Their teeth are sharp & strong...handling these guys isn't an art...it takes brute force. As you're trying to retrieve your brand new spinnerbait, you realize that this is an extremely difficult challenge, if not an almost impossible task. Because of their bony, strong mouth the spinnerbait, head to hook is virtually destroyed. Dogfish are slimy and really strong...never hesitating to try to bite you at times. Placing the middle of your shoe behind their gills allows proper bait removal...without finger removal. The ongoing argument has always been, release or kill them. My Grandfather used to say, you gotta slit their throats. In my neck of the woods, common practice was crushing & throwing them onto the banks. Some anglers see dogfish as a threat to their gamefish ecosystem. I have not caught one in over 6 years, and now realize that they may actually be good for certain fisheries to thrive to their fullest, and avoid population stunting. After thinking about what I was taught, the manner in which I treated this creature of the mud, and reading some forums on bowfin, I realized this fish is famous and also unknown. Fishermen catch them all the time, never seeing or hearing of one before. Some enjoy the great battle they provide. To others they are delicacies, comparing the bowfin to crawfish, and snapping turtle. "Joy of Cooking" has recipes and diagrams on how to clean and fillet bowfin. The bowfin truly is an amazing fish once you sit back and look at it from both sides of the coin. http://www.fishinsecrets.com Tony Liddle grew along the banks of the Mississippi River, and became a warmwater fishing fanatic. Anyone in the world By Kevin Pederson Beet was looked upon by the Romans as being good for cooling the blood. Beet root is also found to benefit against feverish conditions, especially in growing children. Later generations found that beet root was also beneficial for a very strong specific action to regulate the digestive system. The Doctrine of Signatures, which suggests that every plant illustrates its medical purpose, supposed that beet, because of its redness, was good for the blood. In fact the iron content is not particularly high, although it is said to be present in a form that is easy to assimilate. The whole beet family (remember sugar beet) is rich in easily digested carbohydrates, even so the calorie content is not high. The red beetroot tends to concentrate rather than lose its mineral content when boiled for two hours, but the vitamins are generally reduced. Therefore when used therapeutically beetroot is usually juiced raw. Beet root juice taste has a stimulating effect not only upon the nerves of the tongue but also on the nerves in the intestines. In Germany there is widespread use of beet juice, which is available in pasteurized form in bottles, as a powerful restorative during convalescence. It follows that beets are also good for general weakness and debility of all sorts. In combination with other juices, especially carrot and cucumber, beet juice is not only a splendid blood builder but also one of the finest therapies for sexual weakness, kidney stones, gall bladder, kidney, liver and prostate troubles. Beet juice still remains a potent force the secrets of which are far from being unlocked. It is, after carrot, one of the chief juices in the science of natural healing as practiced on earth. The chlorine present in beet juice acts to regulate digestion by controlling the peristalsis, or natural rhythmical contractions of the gut and, because of this, the assimilation of food during the time of recovery is much assisted. Uncooked beets keep rather better than many vegetables. If you cook beets it is important to avoid damaging or cutting the skin. If this happens the red color will leach out into the cooking water leaving the cook with a very pale beet of unattractive appearance. If the skin is accidentally damaged the leakage of color will be very much reduced if you add a few drops of lemon juice or cider vinegar to the water. The dark green beet tops should not be discarded because they are rich in carotene and in minerals. They may be juiced in small quantities as an addition to other juices, whilst steamed they make a good and cheap alternative to spinach. Kevin Pederson has been managing a number of natural home remedies websites which have information on information on common cold as well as importance and value of beet juice.
